Qualitative Analysis of Group I Cations

Students understand the concept of qualitative analysis.


Students use qualitative analysis to separate and detect cations in a sample substance. The tests they perform are not concerned with the amount of a substance in the sample (quantitative analysis), but only with a yes/no (qualitative) answer to the question: is the substance present in the sample? The presence of the cations will be determined by the type of precipitate that forms.
