Precipitation Titration of Cobalt Chloride

Learning Objectives:

Students master the technique of precipitation titration, which applies titration to a reaction that has a precipitate byproduct.

Students perform precipitation titration of a cobalt (II) chloride solution using sodium hydroxide as the titrant. A double displacement reaction results in the formation of cobalt hydroxide, which precipitates out of the solution; students can then measure the formation of these cobalt ions to determine the concentration of the cobalt (II) chloride solution.
