Oxidation States of Manganese

Learning Objectives:

Students examine the various oxidation states of manganese.

Students study the oxidation states of the permanganate ions that are formed via redox reaction, in which either oxidation (the loss of one or more electrons) or reduction (the gain of one or more electrons) occurs. They use the reducing agent sodium bisulfite, carrying out the reaction in acidic, basic, and neutral aqueous solutions.
