Limiting and Excess Reactants

Learning Objectives:

Students understand the concept of limiting reactants: chemical compounds which, according to the ratio of the reacting molecules, are used up first in a reaction.

Procedures:

Students combine two reagents in various ratios, so that each reagent is the limiting reagent at least once. Which reagent is in excess can be tested for; from this result, students determine the molar ratio of the reaction.
