Enthalpy Change of a Chemical Reaction

Learning Objectives:

Students explore exothermic reactions in a sealed container, and measure the heat of reaction in an isolated system.

Procedures:

Students perform a reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid in a calorimeter containing water; assuming that water is the sole medium absorbing the heat of reaction, they can calculate the heat of reaction in joules per moles of reactant.
