Control of Bacterial Growth

Learning Objectives:

Practice common methods of sterilization while exploring control of bacterial growth.

Procedures:

Students test radiation with respect to length of UV exposure versus UV effectiveness of controlling bacterial growth. They also test the UV blocking ability of different materials. A variety of disinfectants are tested by incubation with bacterial cultures. Finally, students sterilize bacteria in the autoclave and compare the level of growth to that of non-autoclaved bacteria.
