Antibiotic Sensitivity

Learning Objectives:

Examine bacterial antibiotic sensitivity and resistance.

Students perform the Kirby-Bauer test, which involves growing bacteria in an agar plate on which one or more round disks containing various antibiotics are arranged. After incubating for 24 hours, bacteria grow to cover the entire plate, excluding circular regions around disks where specific antibiotics (at or above their minimum-potency concentration) kill the bacteria.
